Wake Forest University has claimed the 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship after a dramatic 4-2 victory over defending champions TCU. The title match, held at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas, marked a triumphant return to the pinnacle of college tennis for the Demon Deacons, who last won the championship in 2018.
The victory was hard-earned, as both teams came into the final with strong records and high expectations. Wake Forest took an early lead by clinching the doubles point with commanding wins at No. 1 and No. 3 pairs. In singles, the Deacons continued their momentum, notching victories at the No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6 positions to close out the match 4-2.
Junior standout Rafael Gonzalez delivered the championship-winning point, defeating TCU’s All-American Lucas Vargas in straight sets. Gonzalez, who had battled injuries earlier in the season, called the win “a dream come true” and credited his teammates for staying focused under pressure.
Wake Forest head coach Tony Bresky praised the team’s resilience and growth throughout the season. “This group never stopped believing,” he said. “We faced tough opponents all year long, but these guys trusted the process and stepped up when it mattered most.”
The 2025 season was especially competitive, with several top-ranked programs falling early in the tournament. Wake Forest’s path to the final included gritty wins over Stanford, Georgia, and Ohio State, showcasing their depth and mental toughness.
For TCU, the loss ended their reign as national champions, but head coach David Roditi was gracious in defeat. “Credit to Wake Forest — they were the better team today. We’ll learn from this and come back stronger.”
With a mix of veteran leadership and rising stars, Wake Forest’s men’s tennis program has firmly reestablished itself as a powerhouse. As the college tennis landscape evolves, this title could mark the beginning of another dominant era in Winston-Salem.
